The Alpaca Lifestyle
There are two types of alpacas - the Huacaya and the Suri. The average alpaca lives about 20 to 25 years. They are smaller than llamas, generally weighing between 120 and 170 pounds when fully grown. They are easy keepers, requiring only an acre or two for about 5-10 animals. In addition to grass or hay, alpacas need only some supplemental minerals and a small amount of grain. Moreover, they are tidy animals that establish designated areas for elimination. And, they are quiet, humming only when they are nervous. Additionally, alpacas are wonderfully entertaining and amusing, with very different personalities.
The people who raise alpacas are as interesting and diverse as the animals themselves. When you join the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA) or attend any of the regional associations shows or workshops, you find many kindred spirits, people who have departed from the treadmill of business or professional life to find serenity and contentment in a completely new lifestyle. Some have had a history of farming in their backgrounds, but most have not. The common thread is a love of animals and a strong nurturing instinct. |
